They suffer from an absence of transparent official mechanisms capable of clarifying what happened to the detainees and missing persons.
Jawab is grounded in the belief that organizing and analyzing the information available can constitute an important step toward understanding what happened. For this reason, the platform builds on years of research and documentation carried out by Syrian human rights organizations, as well as on the analysis of evidence, testimonies, and documents gathered over those years. These materials are organized within a searchable database that makes it possible to read the information and connect it together, thereby helping build a clearer picture of pathways of arrest, detention, and enforced disappearance.
The platform does not provide direct access to the original lists and records prepared by official bodies of the Assadist security apparatus. Instead, it makes available the information contained in those documents after organizing and analyzing it in a searchable database, enabling families and researchers to consult the data related to the fate of detainees and missing persons.
These data reflect the nature of the administrative records produced by those institutions, and also help in understanding the administrative structure within which information relating to detainees was recorded. Making these data available comes within the framework of an ethical responsibility toward victims and their families, and within the broader right of Syrians to know what crimes took place inside places of detention.
It is important to stress that Jawab is not a governmental body, and that the information published in victim lists on the platform does not constitute official death notifications, nor does it replace the legal or administrative procedures related to the rights of families before state institutions. These records should also be understood as archival materials that may contain errors or gaps resulting from the conditions in which they were originally produced or preserved.
